Lucian, a Syrian author (125-180 AD) states in his book 'De Dia Syria' ," There is in Syria a city not far from the river Euphrates 1: it is called "the Sacred City," and is sacred to the Assyrian Hera. 2 As far as I can judge this name was not conferred upon the city when it was first settled, but originally it bore another name".

The Greek author Pliny the Elder called the city Mabbog.

The Hindu Pandits called it Mahabhaga.
